Fighting style: Opportunistic! If fitting in with the natives is important, he'll either stick to bare fists or transmute a weapon in advance, though he'll also use alchemy for more subtle advantages whenever he's confident he can get away with it (for example, messing with terrain or enemy equipment). If anything goes, then he damn well means it - transmutations all over the place, and he'll probably break out the armblade too. In either case, he refuses to cast para-magic or summon GFs unless he's pretty much about to die. He's less reluctant to junction, although he used to have something of a hang-up over it as well; generally, when he doesn't have a specific tactic in mind, he'll focus on agility and to a lesser extent defense. Partway through Year 3, Trimester 1, he figured out how to use para-magic as an alchemical energy source in a similar fashion to using his limit break, although as this is relatively inefficient he does it only sparingly.
Limit Break: Amplifier: A brief energy boost comparable to a medium-sized red stone. While it lasts, his transmutations run off this energy in addition to what his Gate of Truth normally taps into (he can't consciously decide not to use it), allowing them to appear to bypass equivalent exchange. He can also transmute without hand movements while his limit break is active. Being just another kind of energy source, the boost depletes as he uses it, but left alone it dissipates naturally after a set amount of time depending on Crisis Level, maxing out at maybe twenty seconds.

Brought to this world by time compression. Abilities depend on the environment. Look out for his metal limbs.
Average HP and low magic; otherwise, high stats all round. Vulnerable to fire, ice, water, poison and almost all conventional statuses, but especially Berserk. Slight innate resistance to Holy and Stop.
Draw list: Demi, Dispel, Quake.
Partial in-game history (up to 4th July 2013):
- Arrived with automail attached (if rather beaten up) and all his clothes. Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey. He walked to Balamb Town after failing to get much useful information out of anyone (his eye colour and behaviour marked him fairly clearly as an offworlder), and there heard about Garden.
- Started researching a way back through the Gate as soon as he got here, hampered by a lack of resources. Still trying, and has reinvented a lot of the field of alchemy by this point, though he's pretty much lost hope if he's completely honest. Used to be fairly open regarding his experiments since he figured nobody here would know about the taboo on human transmutation, but became more secretive after discovering he wasn't the first alchemist pulled in by Time Compression. (Never know when another one might suddenly turn out to have been on a mission all this time, right?) These days, the practical experiments he does carry out are mostly confined to his dorm.
- Agreed to owe Jack Spicer a favour in return for fixing his arm. Promptly fell out with the guy big time, and narrowly avoided getting into trouble with the Disciplinary Committee for it.
- Met a manga Ed during the fourth wall event who he didn't take to at all, though the encounter gave him a research idea.
- Made a scrap metal pocketwatch to replace the one he doesn't have any more.
- Sort of offered Rapunzel lessons in alchemical theory. Tried one. It was interrupted by angst.
- Grudges borne since the Holi paintball competition? Pretty much everyone except Rainbow Dash. But especially Shadow, who walked off when he was just getting started.
- Received a multitool from Snow for no real reason.
- Learned that Rapunzel would really like to see floating lanterns on her birthday. Made a few. Touma agreed to put them up on the day in exchange for a favour, because that worked out so well last time.
- Got a little sidetracked reading about this world's flying machines when he was making said lanterns, and briefly gained an interest in rockets as a way of getting home until the Tenth Doctor shut him down, totally screwing up the path of canon in the process.
- Helped the Doctor break into the Ragnarok and have a look around. Subsequently got slightly ticked off over not being allowed to break anything else.
- Wrecked a bulletin board after a pissing match with Sigyn got out of hand. Had crude drawings of him tacked up all over the Garden for a short while as an indirect result, which didn't help his reputation. Also had, somewhat more directly, detention.
- Encountered Instructor Roy Mustang after the guy returned from a mission. Things got pretty awkward.
- Remained kind of moody for most of the Boxing field trip, which began a day later.
- Borrowed Espio's Chaos Emerald to try and harness some of its energy. Secretly, the plan was to then use that energy in his own attempt to get home, though after Roy grilled him about it he started to have second thoughts. Didn't make much progress, but didn't give it back for a while either.
- Helped defeat Diablos... a little. And then had the fun job of reporting it to higher up.
- Just about lived through a Survival Skills field trip with Rainbow and Cissie.
- Nominated for Homecoming Prince, mainly by people who thought it would be funny. And won, despite... well, not really his best efforts, but then the other two candidates were also trying not to win. That wasn't a fun month.
- Fallout from the Homecoming date auction: nobody owed anyone any dates (because that would be stupid). But he grudgingly agreed to try out flying, Rainbow Dash agreed to try out alchemy, and a letter to Princess Celestia would have been involved if she'd been on-world at the time.
- Billy adjusted his leg for him and insisted that he didn't pay. He had no idea why.
- Signed up to be an RA for the pay and extra personal space.
- Present for the attack by Galbadia; helped evacuate the library before joining the fight proper. Afterwards, saved Garden probably at least a week of repairs singlehandedly, being overpowered like that.
- Was replaced for a few days by some black-haired kid bearing an uncanny resemblance to him. Had no memory of it until a couple of weeks later, at which point he didn't take it particularly well.
- For Christmas / the Shiva festival / Hearth's Warming / whatever (he didn't know about any of these holidays), received a set of huge textbooks from Rainbow, a photo of himself, Al and Nina from a quirk of Time Compression, and nothing else because he's a jerk.
- Went to an Esthar orphanage along with a few other people on a holiday giftgiving mission, encountered a representative of Sol Invictus there and exacerbated the situation by displaying a breathtaking lack of diplomacy.
- Confidence in Garden hit a low with the "break" at the Island Closest to Heaven. He complied (and in fact went out every single day to look after weaker cadets until he got thoroughly yelled at for not taking care of himself), but is now just waiting for an excuse to cut and run the way Espio apparently planned to.
- Got a chair for his birthday, except not really.
- Went on a mission with Chase and Selphie to guard a film crew from dragons in unnecessarily dramatic ways.
- During the second fourth wall, ran into entirely too many ponies and also took a Winry on a tour around the school.
- After a flash of inspiration and when the furore over the fourth wall had died down, made a halfhearted attempt to open the Gate by sacrificing Greed. It failed because he didn't know what a manga homunculus was, and things went downhill from there. But hey, at least he met Ling.
- Graduated with (kind of) flying colours. The exam involved kids being held hostage by teenage rebels on a train carriage, lots of shounening, and one of the cadets' opponents insulting his braid.
- Was willing to give the Time Compression Mage a chance when he first came to Balamb, and believed him almost unreservedly after getting a look at the man's papers. Did not take it well when proven wrong, but with those papers in mind, had some ideas of his own...
- ...which led to him breaking the fucking universe by sneaking through the Lunar Cry and opening the Gate at Tears Point, just below where the Mage was doing his thing.
- On the other side of the Gate, did not lose any more limbs but did revert to his (shorter) appearance on the day he lost Al, complete with inexplicably nonlethal Envy-induced stab wound. Things were awkward.
- After the battle, moped. He didn't tell anyone about breaking the fucking universe, so he got a rank increase for participating.
Game-specific headcanon:
- Still growing! Current age: 17; current height: brushing 5'5" with shoes on. In face and build he's beginning to look a lot more like his CoS self, but he still braids his hair.
- His goal in graduating is to rise high enough in rank that he has the autonomy and sufficient resources to pretty much do his own thing - that is, find a way home. The parallels haven't escaped him. He's gradually losing hope, and the trajectory of his development should be vaguely familiar... but not quite the same, since he isn't as helpless here.
- Handwavey explanation for why he showed up with coat and automail nearly intact, which may or may not conflict with other things: his body and mind had recently been dissociated, so Time Compression ended up pulling his body from a month or two earlier, and his automail was only damaged by monsters when he was making his way to Balamb.
- Has never needed a translator; his native language isn't called English, but it sure as hell looks and sounds like it.
- He types slowly, so his BBS posts are often on the terse side (though this has been getting better) and you can forget about markup. With practice he's started to use both hands (he typed left-handed before), but it's difficult for him to touch type because, y'know. He still prefers text over audio, though - it isn't really more anonymous, given people can just look up his ID number (and he tends to inadvertently out himself before long anyway), but it feels like it. Although keyboards and even computers weren't totally new concepts to him, they're much less advanced in his world and he didn't have much experience of them before arriving here; out of habit, he sticks to pen and paper (or ideally chalk and a hard surface) if he can.
- Although he can't really deny that magic actually works in this universe, he doesn't like it. Outside of classes, he used to point-blank refuse to use it if he had any choice, and even now is much more likely to rely on his alchemy or go hand to hand in a fight. He has less of a hang-up about junctioning and was thankful for it during the Island Closest to Hell trips, but still finds it kind of weird.
- The Polymorphus Potion in particular creeps him out a lot; it pings several of his issues at once.
- On the other hand, he's fairly comfortable with weird weaponry, methods of transport and technology in general; he doesn't always know how to use it, but he's quick on the uptake.
- With time and resignation, he's starting to tone down the obnoxiousness in class, but he still isn't much fun to teach - he invariably thinks he knows better. There's never been anything to fault about his assignments or exams, though. The sole exception is Speech & Conduct.
- Usually seen in his trademark red-black-white outfit, of which he's made a few spares whenever he could afford the material. (The cadet uniform was designed for someone taller.) In particular, he has four black jackets with only slight differences between them. After a few months stuck at Garden, he started to buy regular casual clothes on occasion (primarily shirts and t-shirts) and will wear them from time to time, but generally the coat and gloves stay on.
- Inside Balamb Garden, he isn't overly concerned about people noticing his automail - for a start, it's been brought up on the BBS before, and he happily attended classes like Boxing without the coat and jacket. Next to all the talking animals and so on, who cares? If he does try to deflect unnecessary attention to it, it's mostly out of habit. Outside, though, he's as cautious as ever.
- When not on missions (and while he was studying), inclined to spend his free time in the library, but he hangs around the quad and cafeteria fairly often as well, and can regularly be found in the training centre. He also heads into town semi-frequently when Garden is docked there, mainly for shopping.
- Despite all the stray cats around Garden, he has yet to encounter one willing to come anywhere near him. Secretly, this annoys him.
- Can and will get defensive about having somehow ended up best friends with a pony.
