Meeting Edward for the first time, you'd probably come away thinking he was an arrogant brat with a cynical streak wider than he is short. And you'd be right. Irritable, impulsive, prone to violent outbursts, generally brusque and bitterly sarcastic, Ed is not a person who makes friends in a hurry. He is as intelligent as he likes to claim, rashness aside - perceptive and quick on the uptake as well as book smart - just not quite enough to support the size of his ego. In a nutshell, he's a jerk. But it's also true that he's been tossed around by the universe for much of his life, and turned out a nicer person than you might expect for it.

If there's one thing that defines him, it's not a character trait so much as an idea - alchemy's Principle of Equivalent Exchange, which states that in order to obtain anything you must sacrifice something of equal value. Ed ended up squarely on the wrong side of this principle once, and has taken it very seriously since then; he's always had a strong sense of responsibility and obligation (being an older brother will do that to you, especially after the two of you are effectively orphaned), but that incident really cemented it. He even extended the principle into a philosophy of sorts: if you sacrifice enough and pay for your mistakes, you'll earn your own happiness. Having grown up and witnessed the imperfection of the world around him, Ed no longer believes that equivalent exchange is an absolute law, but he still feels like the world would be a better place if it was, so he tries to live up to it.

With a worldview like this, bloody-minded stubbornness becomes a positive quality, so it's just as well that Ed has it in spades. In fact, the worldview and his determination sort of fuel each other. When Ed decides he's going to do something, come hell or high water he will do it; if things don't turn out well, they are his mess to clean up, and nobody else's. This outlook gets him into more trouble than it gets him out of, but that's never stopped him.

The only thing that can sometimes cause said determination to waver stems from the same sense of obligation, funnily enough: Ed is much kinder than he'd like to think. If he meets someone he thinks he can help out, he might gripe about it or rationalise it as something other than altruism, but he'll do it more often than not. On the other hand, failing to help people is something he finds difficult to forgive, regardless of extenuating circumstances - and that definitely goes for his own failures as well.

Given the apparent contradiction that his worldview causes and the weight of the guilt it carries, it's probably not surprising that he has a slight penchant for brooding. He only does it when he's in one of his infrequent introspective moods, but when he is, the slightest provocation could set him off. Weirdly, it's more likely to happen around people he doesn't know too well; if Ed is talking to someone he's close to, he'll usually struggle for words or simply pretend to be fine, because being honest about his feelings doesn't come easily to him. Don't get him wrong, though - most of the time, angst is not his biggest concern.

Ultimately, he's a fairly straightforwardly heroic person who only needs a little cajoling to properly show it.

Quick rundown of unusual features:
- He's an alchemist. Alchemy, in this context, is the ability to reshape matter pretty much however he wants, as long as he knows what the material is (and it's not a human body, because those tend to be bad ideas). Most alchemists also need to draw an appropriate transmutation circle around the material first, but Ed doesn't.
- His left leg starting from just above the knee and entire right arm are advanced steel prosthetics called automail. They give him as much mobility as he as with his regular limbs, but they're a lot heavier than normal limbs, he has no tactile sensation in them and leave him more vulnerable than most people to changes in environmental temperature. The first two features can sometimes be advantages, mind. They also need oiling and maintenance like any machine, but it probably won't matter too much over this kind of time span... I guess?
- He's had martial arts training and is a pretty decent fist fighter. He's also used polearms and hammers on occasion. His favourite weapon is his armblade, but that's connected to his alchemy - he transmutes it out of the cover on his automail arm.
- He can interpret anything as a height slur. Anything.

{Other important facts}: Despite icons that might suggest otherwise, his coat is not making it into this setting.

{First Person Sample}:
[The man with the freaky voice isn't worth paying attention to. The other people in the room can wait. Something more important is missing from this picture - this dank, creaking picture - and Ed is going to pound on that door behind him until it gives it up.]

Al! Dammit! Al!!

[It doesn't. And it's odd, notes the part of his brain that isn't buzzing with anger. The door didn't look that thick on the way in.

He takes a step back, presses the palms of his hands together... and stops. Nothing. Not even the absence of the familiar rush of energy. If only that didn't make sense. Just to be sure, he starts to roll his right jacket sleeve up - no, he's definitely himself this time. Figures the universe would only let him take the easy way out before he knew about it.

That grinning man is still standing there when he looks over his shoulder. It's all Ed can do to stop his own voice from shaking.]

You know how to get me out of here. Let's cut to the chase.

{Third Person Sample}: I'm going to be super lazy and just link this. Let me know if it's not enough!

{Questions and comments?}: On the off chance I get in - hopefully not pre-empting mod judgement or anything, but is it okay if he loses his alchemy and keeps everything else (i.e. his automail)? ^^;; I think removing it kind of makes more canon sense than a less drastic nerf...
Oh yeah, even if it wasn't meant to be this time, I just want to say that this premise is awesome. ♥
