character survey! :D
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Height: short. 5'2" at the age of sixteen, isn't going to grow more than a couple of inches for the rest of his life. (Yes, this differs from the manga.) Build: deceptively wiry; it's hard to tell until he takes his shirt off.
2. How old is he? 16, or thereabouts.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? It mainly depends on his mood, but outside of formal situations he slouches more often than not.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? Apart from the whole missing-a-couple-of-limbs thing, extremely fit and healthy.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Agile when he wants to be, but you wouldn't call him graceful. In a fight, he tends to favour his automail limbs more.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?Ask the fangirls! He's pretty attractive and doesn't care who else knows, but in the mirror he sees someone fundamentally incomplete.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? Light and clear.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Blond, quite thick, more or less shoulder-length. He normally ties it back in a single braid, but in a rush a regular ponytail will do. His fringe is long enough to frame his face and parted in the centre. He also has an ahoge, but it often sticks out in front or to the side instead of being perfectly vertical.
9. What color are his eyes? Gold. Back home, this is uncommon but not especially remarkable. The colour has no hidden significance whatsoever.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Automail right arm, automail left leg, very very short... temper.
11. What are his chief tension centers? I don't know, his head?
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? He has a favourite outfit of which he's rarely seen out of: black shirt, black jacket, black trousers, red longcoat, a belt, white gloves and platform shoes. The gloves, trousers and jacket are meant to cover his automail, while the coat and shoes are supposed to make him look taller. He has a few spare copies of everything. When he's not in these clothes, he's kind of fond of long-sleeved shirts and waistcoats, but will generally wear whatever's handy. He'll dress even more casually (T-shirts, shorts and the like) if he's with people he knows well.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? Considering he's almost never out of his signature outfit, yes and yes. He can instantly remake any of his clothes when they're damaged or otherwise stop fitting him, and also make spares from any remotely appropriate material he has lying around, so that helps.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences? Exactly the same, unless he's made to wear uniform, in which case he'll just look awkward.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando? Stop making fun of him or he'll punch you D:<
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse? High enough that his seiyuu is a lady, but not ridiculously so - at worst, it sounds maybe a year or two younger than he is. It gets squeakier and raspier when he's angry.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate? Very freely, somewhat roughly, and without much concern for whoever he's talking to most of the time. He doesn't tend to talk quietly unless he's feeling serious.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics? None that aren't really just standard colloquialisms. Unless you count his reaction to any perceived height slur as a verbal tic; it's generally along the lines of "WHO ARE YOU CALLING A <wildly exaggerated, overly complicated insult based only loosely on whatever he actually heard> I'M GONNA <graphically violent threat>".
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency? Only English, his native language. He might not call it English, but it's close enough.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations? No. He doesn't even switch registers unless he absolutely has to.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words? Eh, he's not inclined to think first about anything, and he's not one for public speaking, but he can come up with something listenable on the fly if he needs to - how listenable depends on the subject matter.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change? He has eloquent moments. Get him started on some topic he knows a lot about (i.e. alchemy) and they become more frequent.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart? Oh man. Both. On the book side of things, he's a freaking prodigy - his knowledge of alchemy and the related sciences is at least on par with any other alchemist in the military back home, and none of them are teenagers. On top of that, he's extremely adept at picking up new things, drawing connections and generally thinking creatively under pressure. His street smarts aren't as impressive, but decent - he's pretty good at reading people and situations alike, certainly not gullible or naive. His main problem is that he tends to swing too far in the other direction, so he's still vulnerable to manipulation if you know how to push his buttons.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate? On his feet. Deliberating is for wusses.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical? His is the cynicism that will pierce the heavens! In most cases he likes to take the rational option, but of course his frame of mind affects what he perceives to be rational, like with anyone. And when he does have emotional outbursts... well, they're definitely outbursts.
4. What kind of education has the character had? As a kid, mostly self-taught from books lying around the house, although my headcanon says he did go to the village school when he was little. When he was 11, he and his brother spent about a year apprenticed to a housewife who taught them alchemy and martial arts. After that, he studied alchemy pretty much full-time for something like half a year until he passed the State Alchemist qualifying exam. He hasn't bothered with much study since then.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about? Alchemy and alchemy, though other sciences would be honorable mentions.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert? It depends? Most of the time he comes across as an extroverted jerk, and he's certainly not shy around people, but he doesn't express his honest feelings very easily unless the feeling is anger.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven? Choleric, stubborn, quick to anger... oh, and he is driven. That's basically what the rest of his personality is built around.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic? Suspicious but fearless - not an attitude that usually endears him to said new people.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react? He prefers to act, but it's not always possible.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Fight, duh!
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks? Bitingly sarcastic, usually at the expense of other people, and none too subtle about it.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them? He has one hell of a lot of issues. I don't know that any of them would qualify as disorders. The most likely one is PTSD - on at least one occasion, he's had flashbacks so vivid that he lost consciousness - but if he does suffer from that, either his triggers are so specific that they crop up only rarely or he's just good at avoiding them.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person? His mother dying, and the night he failed to bring her back. Nina Tucker dying, oddly enough. Lab 5. Confrontations with homunculi. More recently, when he sacrificed himself to bring his brother back... or tried to, anyway. Just read a plot summary.
14. What does he fear? Losing his last connections to family without being able to make everything up to them. Coincidentally, this has already happened.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations? Ultimately, to undo every mistake he's ever made so he and the people he cares about can live out a normal life. He's aware it's not all that realistic.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? Well, pretty much all of his secrets are out to varying degrees. But he's not nearly as logical as he wants to be, and he's not proud of it.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents. He harbours some resentment towards his father for abandoning them, though less now that he knows the reason why. On the other hand, his mother was apparently the best mother ever, but she's dead, which sucks.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like? Yes, his younger brother Alphonse - and since Al is the other protagonist of the series, there is entirely too much to say about their relationship. But close, sure, that'll do.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand? Nope, no others he knows of. Though I guess you could torture the definition of blood relative until it included Envy... who, um, killed him, so they are not on the best of terms.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? Childhood friend Winry and her grandmother Pinako, who pretty much adopted him and Al after their mother died. They are his family, never mind considering. He has a slight surrogate mother/child thing going on with his teacher Izumi, but it doesn't really compare.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet? If his brother doesn't count, Winry. They've known each other forever.
6. Does he have other close friends? Not too many. He keeps them at a distance if at all possible.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people? Friend-making is more his brother's style. Still, when he does manage to make a friend who can look past his general abrasiveness, they tend to last.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends? Family, though he's been known to slip.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once? Single and not especially interested. Also, never married - he's sixteen.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? No. See above.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? When he was little, Winry, mostly since she was the most prominent girl his age in his life. Not really anybody since then - he's been a little distracted.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner? Someone who understands the way he thinks, because it's unlikely to change.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any? Sixteen! Sheesh. But no, no kids. He doesn't particularly want them at this point in time, or any time soon - besides, he wouldn't be the greatest parent. Maybe someday, when he has nothing else left to do.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies? He's never really avoided making them.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale? He honestly doesn't care much, but if he's leaning anything it's more likely to be straight - let's say hovering around 1 or 2.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? Yeah, even if he's not asexual, he doesn't give much of a damn.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits? I am going to skip this question.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type? Western horoscope would be Aquarius. From a cursory Wikipedia-ing, I guess it fits about as well as any other sign - I mean, they have the headstrong and obstinate parts down right. Eastern... he was born in 1899 and my headcanon says his birthday is in late January, so apparently it's Dog, which thematically is actually pretty appropriate. But in either case he'd just tell you that astrology is a load of wishy-washy implausible crap that you should stop wasting time on.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life? Ahahaha no. Actually, he's agnostic, but he has such an abiding mistrust of religion that you probably wouldn't be able to tell.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it? He does! One is all, all is one, equivalent exchange, etc etc. He learned some of that stuff from his alchemy teacher but only properly started to live by it after his failed human transmutation. It would take a pretty extreme situation to get him to compromise on it, but it's happened - for example, he used to have a hang-up about killing.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent? He won't consider them seriously unless they directly challenge one of his own beliefs. Still, he'll probably listen - after all, he's not averse to pushing his own worldview onto others if given the opportunity, so it's only fair.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them? He's admitted to being kind of racist after growing up in a society that deliberately cultivates those kinds of attitudes - awareness of it just means he can try not to be. He'd almost certainly admit to some others, for similar reasons. The exception would be his distaste for religion, which he thinks is totally justified.
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? He hasn't been wanting for money since securing a job as a State Alchemist. Even before then, he was getting by well enough on support from his surrogate family, and possibly his parents' savings.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him? At this point in time, he's a disgraced military dog. He used to be a slightly less disgraced one (fairly high-ranking too; the equivalent of a Major), and before that he was just some kid from a backwater village. Going from a nobody to an authority figure despised by the common people wasn't the easiest transition, but he learned to live with it, even if he had to throw away any pride he had left.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? He doesn't think of himself as having a home any more - he'll crash pretty much anywhere convenient, or inconvenient if there are no other options. The Rockbells' fairly large house back in his hometown comes pretty close, though.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on? More food. Motor oil. Cheap fabric for clothes. Books, if he can't get them by other means. Occasionally presents for other people.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else? He was a State Alchemist, essentially a superpowered soldier who also conducts research for the military, and he was good enough at it that he managed to hold onto the job through several yearly evaluations. He didn't like it even before finding out what the state military actually uses all that research for, but he never felt like he deserved better. Anyway, his occupation at this point in canon is "fugitive", which doesn't pay very well.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time? He likes reading (non-fiction more than fiction) and sometimes sparring with other people.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? He'll eat a lot if you let him, meals and snacks alike, and pretty much anything he can get his hands on - having to lug around two hunks of metal 24/7 burns off a lot of energy. He's not old enough to drink alcohol.
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:
1. Color? Red, black and white - it's sort of a theme he has going on
2. Smell? Slightly metallic
3. Time of day? Sunset
4. Season? Autumn
5. Book? Probably something thick, dusty and impossibly dry
6. Music? Classical stuff from the later Romantic period; that's contemporary for him. On a meta level, his image song "Returnable Memories".
7. Place? A train station platform
8. Substance? Steel!
9. Plant? Melissa
10. Animal? A stray dog; he likes cats too, but not as much as his brother

Beliefs

It would take a pretty extreme situation to get him to compromise on it, but it's happened - for example, he used to have a hang-up about killing.
